How To Beat The Effects Of Stress

I think we can collectively agree that this last year has redefined stress for all of us!

Whatever the cause may be, stress is meant to be a natural, fleeting response - think “fight or flight”. When you begin to feel stressed more consistently, or even daily, this can wreak havoc on your body, particularly your adrenals.

Your adrenal glands are in charge of releasing your stress hormones. Initially, cortisol and adrenaline are released to get your body moving when you sense danger. Overtime, the constant stress reaction, which can be caused by your environment or a high amount of stimulants in your diet (caffeine and sugar: I’m looking at you!) will eventually deplete your level of adrenaline, but keep the cortisol high. This can cause weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, and bad bacteria growth in the gut. When even the cortisol levels deplete, your adrenals will be totally exhausted.

Here are some foods that can actually help support your adrenals:

  1. Maca - this ginseng root is a natural adaptogen, which help to fight against the stress response on your body. It can also increase your energy and elevate your mood.

  2. Schisandra - this herb is another type of adaptogen that can be taken in supplement form or as a tea.

  3. Essential fatty acids - good fats are needed for hormone production, which can be helpful when stress gets them out of whack!

  4. Lean proteins - amino acids that make up proteins, such as tryptophan, can help reduce stress levels, improve your mood and sleep.
